The tree, sadly stripped of its distuingishing form

Just earlier this week, I put a collection of photos of ‘the tree’: a quirky, beautiful silver poplar (‘witte abeel’, in dutch) that I’ve photographed many times over the years, in different seasons and under varying conditions. With its graceful branches, at some angles almos like the arms of a dancer, it never ceased to inspire.

The initial text on the gallery page said something like how “I have photographed ‘the tree’ many times over the years and hopefully will do so many more times in the years to come”. Unbeknownst of what I’d run into this morning, I’d changed that specific sentence for something without the bit about hoping to do so many more times…

A dancer no more

…As it unfortunately turned out this morning when I went to visit the tree, there won’t be any new additions to that collection. Or at least not with the tree in all of its magical glory: The tree lost two of its most characteristic branches, that must have probably broke during the heavy winds we had in the passed days.

Below is what the tree now looks like, compared to its former shape pictured below:

The tree as it currently looks

The tree as it used to look from this same angle

It’s so sad to see how the tree is now stripped from its distuingishing form. And to see those branches, full of bud as spring has just begun, hanging down so sadly. Now, I am not a tree specialist and have no idea how the tree recovers from something like this; if it just continues to live and grow, if perhaps new branches will form where they have broken of, but I imagine the tree won’t ever look as it did up until a few days ago.
