Mother Nature’s April fools

After a mild winter without any snow, spring began about 10 days ago. And we noticed; last week was full of sun and we’ve already spent a few nice afternoons working in the garden in our t-shirts. However, then April came and Mother Nature had an icy joke up her sleeve!

When it became clear that there would very likely be snow today, I set my alarm to make sure I’d be up in time to go for a quick walk before work and taking the kids to school. I had about 45 minutes from having just enough light before sunrise to photograph and needing to be back home again.

I was surprised to find that even though being out so early I clearly wasn’t the first to walk the main paths. I guess I wasn’t the only one who had been longing for snow this last winter and gladly took the opportunity right away now that it surprisingly arrived in spring.

Other paths had been walked on as well, but only by ‘locals’ (a fox, I guess):

With only little time available I subconsciously decided on route through the dunes that I know well and has various interesting frames that I wanted to capture in these conditions. Below is one of them, with those three slightly curved trees on the right. It’s a capture I’ve taken many times before under different conditions . I find it very satisfying to see how different scenes may look and feel at different times.

And below is another favorite view, looking so completely different depending on the time of year:

Although I’d happily spend most of the day wandering to such a magical white world, I only had about 45 minutes this morning and so I had start heading back. Here in the dunes that means making your way through the dunes forest, which is under these conditions a very nice part of the walk. I love how the trees contrast with the snow and the beautiful lines and patterns that results in.

And that was it for me this morning! Only 45 minutes out in the snow, but a very unexpected 45 minutes given the time of year, so I a definitely not complaining.
